Did You Know that Winnipeg Blue Bombers Superstar Andrew Harris Grew Up in Steinbach?

I’ll be the first to admit I don’t know a lot about football. In fact, when Andrew and I first met and he started making me watch football I had trouble following it. First down?  Interception? Oh, it’s only half time? We had Blue Bombers season tickets for over a decade and my knowledge did grow. Still waiting for that Grey Cup, though.

Thankfully, the Bombers signed hometown running back Andrew Harris a couple years ago. He can run! He can catch! He can even block… or so Andrew (my husband) tells me.

But did you know that Andrew Harris grew up in Steinbach? Yup! His football career started right here playing for the Eastman Raiders. I’m guessing he’s the biggest sports star ever to come out of this town.

There’s even a sign dedicated to him at A.D. Penner Park… although they do need to update it as he no longer (thankfully) plays for the B.C. Lions.

The Eastman Raiders honour Andrew Harris.

Unfortunately, growing up in Steinbach wasn’t always easy for Harris, as I learned in this TSN documentary. If you haven’t watched this, I highly recommend it.

Harris and the Bombers play their first game of the season tomorrow. Go Bombers! This is our year! (I hope…)
